Duties/Obligations of beneficiaries of the social security system
In the non-contributory regime the main duties are as follows:
- Register in the social security system *
- Submit an application for social benefits (on a separate form), duly completed, signed and with all the necessary documents attached *
- Meet all the specific conditions for access to each of the specific social benefits.
- Communicate and update information to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).
- Collaborate with INSS services, including Incapacity Verification Services (SVI).
- Visit, in person, when requested by INSS, to complete a Proof of Life
* Registration and application are done by the citizen at the same time.
In the contributory regime the main duties are as follows:
- Register in the social security system *
- Contribute to the contributory regime and pay the respective social contributions *
- Meet the qualifying period, i.e. a minimum period of contribution to access benefits.
- Meet all the specific conditions for access to each of the specific benefits.
- Submit an application for benefits (on a separate form), duly completed, signed and with all the necessary documents attached.
- Communicate and update information to the National Social Security Institute (INSS).
- Collaborate with INSS services, including Incapacity Verification Services .
- Visit, in person, when requested by INSS, to complete a Proof of Life
*Employer is responsible for registration and payment of contributions of their employees.
In the case of Individual Business Owners (mandatory registration) and all citizens/workers (optionally registered) in the social security, the registration and payment of social contributions is their responsibility.
